Nicki Minaj has said “Hell no” to more of the pop-flavored music that dominated her album Pink Friday in an effort to shed her “female rapper” label. She told MTV News “I do not see myself as a female rapper anymore, I’m sorry, I see myself as a rapper.”
As such, she wants to ditch the outlandish costumes and colorful makeup to remind people that she is a dope MC and all the other stuff is irrelevant. As someone who has held her own with Kanye, Nas and Eminem, I feel like this move was long overdue for Nicki. It was very hard for me to take her music seriously with her previous looks, though the Tatiana Ward Era of her makeup was superb. It was easing her into looking like a person rather than a character.
“I’ve worked with the greats and I’ve held my own with the greats and they respect me,” she explained in the MTV interview. “So I should respect myself enough to see myself the same way they see themselves.”
Yes, Honey! Amen.
The Other Woman, Nicki’s feature film debut, is in theaters now. When are we getting this album though? See the interview below to find out!
