BET Cancels Celebration of Gospel

It was the most watched gospel/religious program in history after running for 14 years. The latest installment, hosted by Taraji P. Henson got the highest numbers to date. Yet, BET is calling a quits.

According to AlwaysAList

‘Despite its stellar ratings and continued success, BET revealed during their upfront presentation to advertisers in New York that “Celebration of Gospel” would not return as one of its “Mega-Specials.” The network is bringing back the “BET Awards,” “Black Girls Rock,” “BET Hip Hop Awards,” and “BET Honors.”

More than 2.6 Million veiwers tuned in to see the show on the network April 6. Folks at BET seem to have no idea why they would choose to cancel such a successful show which has boasted guests by the likes of Tamela Mann, Monica, Candice Glover,Yolanda Adams and the late Whitney Houston.

There are petitions circulating to bring the show back. Click here the one from Root Magazine. Fair warning, I don’t know who’s idea it was to tile pictures of Steven B. Steward  as a background, but it makes it impossible to see. Just highlight the screen and find the petition boxes.

See Whitney’s surprise 2011 performance below. Will you miss the show?
