Michael Jace, best known for the aforementioned role in TV drama, “The Shield” was arrested yesterday in connection with the shooting death of his wife. April. According to the Los Angeles Times, April Jace had just returned home from picking up the couple’s sons from baseball practice 15 minutes before Michael shot her multiple times Monday night. The children were in the home
Police believe the reason behind the shooting to be domestic violence, a claim that was first brought against him by his first wife, Jennifer Bitterman. Twenty years ago, Bitterman claimed that Jace had threatened to kill her if there was a custody battle for their son. She believed him to be temperamental and unreliable. In 1997, a family friend claimed in sworn documents that she witnessed several incidents of violence between Jace and Bitterman, including an instance where he “choked at hit” her and “slammed her against the wall while [her son] screamed in his crib next to her.” The child was 6 months old at the time.
Jace has been under financial stress over the last several years, since “The Sheild” ended it’s 6 year run in 2008. He’d filed Chapter 13 bankruptcy in March 2011 claiming debt totaling $500,000 and an income of $80,000. He owed $22,000 in taxes and defaulted on the $411,000 mortgage attached to the home where the shooting occurred.
Michael and April married in 2003, one year after he divorced Bitterman.
