Oh, R. Kelly… you can’t win.
Six years after being acquitted on child pornography charges, they still come back to bite R. Kelly in the pockets. The “Black Panties” maestro was set to take the stage in Ohio for the Fashion Meets Music Festival last night but locals were not having it and neither were other performers. Following weeks of chatter and outrage from the people of Columbus, FMMF organizers and R. Kelly’s people released a statement.
“Fashion Meets Music Festival and headlining artist R. Kelly have come to the mutual decision to cancel Kelly’s upcoming performance at the inaugural Fashion Meets Music Festival.”
Followed by R. Kelly’s PR acknowledgement:
“R. Kelly is sorry to disappoint his fans, but looks forward to seeing them in the near future during one of his upcoming tours.”
Folk rock band, Saintseneca who were also in the line up, dropped out upon the news of his addition as headliner. In a statement on their website, they wrote:
“…we were disappointed that the artist selected to headline the festival was R. Kelly. We feel his selection as a performer ignores his very serious allegations of sexual violence and assault. We feel it is an affront to all survivors, who are already often overlooked and forgotten in our society.”
The festival also lost the backing of WCBE 90.5 FM, a local radio station whose license is held by the school board. General Manager Dan Mushalko had this to say about cancelling their sponsorship:
” Obviously, since they represent children and they represent teenagers, they didn’t want us associated with the event if R. Kelly was a part of it. So whether you looked at it from our internal ethics, or the feedback from our listeners and the school district, it came down to everything saying, ‘You just can’t do it.’”
When your performers start dropping like flies and news spreads quickly thanks to social media, it only makes sense that you look at what’s causing the issue. Unfortunately for the R., it was him.
Oh well, he’s got all his baby-making music to keep him occupied but it looks like he might want to go back to stepping.
