The actress who played “Rue” in the original Hunger Games movie has shared some very important knowledge on cultural appropriation with the world, given the current popular and political climate.
After sharing the history project on her Tumblr page, Amandla Stenberg is trending all over the internet for discussing mainstream media’s misappropriation of African-American culture– a culture born out of adversity– by pop stars like Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and Macklemore.
“Hip-hop stems from a black struggle, it stems from jazz and blues, styles of music African-Americans created to retain humanity in the face of adversity…. Appropriation occurs when a style leads to racist generalizations or stereotypes where it originated but is deemed as high-fashion, cool or funny when the privileged take it for themselves.”
