Nicki Minaj vs. Miley Cyrus

The twists the Video Music Awards, VMAs, brought this year were a dowzy. After a very public squabble on Twitter between Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj, many were surprised to see the two share the stage together. Instead of Minaj and Swift having a catfight like many speculated, it was Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus who had a heated exchange on stage. It began during Nicki Minaj’s acceptance speech for Best Hip Hop Video for “Anaconda.” Nicki Minaj ended her speech by saying “and now back to this bitch who had a lot to say about me the other day in the press . . . Miley, what’s good?” After a shocked expression, Miley replied “hey, we’re all in this industry, we all do interviews and we all know how they manipulate shit. Nicki, congratu-fucking-lations.” While Cyrus continued to host, Nicki Minaj’s mic was turned off but she continued to speak and it can be theorized that she said “don’t play with me bitch, you don’t play with me” based on her lip movements. The exchange is now being questioned as real or staged.

I know what you are wondering. How did this all start?

Well, it started at Twitter between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift. MTV released the nominees for the VMAs and the nominees for Video of the Year included Swift’s “Bad Blood” with Kendrink Lamar but did not include Minaj’s “Anaconda” or “Feelin’ Myself” featuring Beyonce. Minaj went on to direct a stream of tweets at MTV for not including her singles for Best Choreography and Video of the Year. She tweeted “when the “other” girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination,” “ff your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year” and later retweeted articles confirming racism in the music industry. Swift replied to MInaj’s tweet with “I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot” at which point Minaj tweeted that she did not understand how any of her previous tweets referred to Swift and called out “white media and their tactics.” Swift attempted to end the fued by inviting Minaj if she won the award. It should be noted that Minaj was nominated for three other awards, Best Female Video with “Anaconda,” Best Hip Hop Video with “Anaconda” and Best Collaboration with Jessie J’s “Bang Bang” that also featured Ariana Grande.

After that exciting day on Twitter, Miley Cyrus chimed in during an interview with New York Times with some interesting words such as noting that Minaj made the racial discussion in the music industry about herself simply because she did not recieve a VMA nomination. She also stated “what I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite. I think there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love. You don’t have to start this pop star against pop star war. It became Nicki Minaj and Taylor in a fight, so now the story isn’t even on what you wanted it to be about. I know you can make it seem like, ‘Oh I just don’t understand because I’m a white pop star.’ I know the statistics. I know what’s going on in the world. But to be honest, I don’t think MTV did that on purpose.”

Thus leading us to what happened at the VMAs. Was Nicki Minaj correct about her assessment of the VMAs or did Miley Cyrus correctly call out Nicki Minaj’s greediness?
