As the release date for season 3 of Netflix’s original hit series “Orange Is The New Black” approaches, Essence magazine heats up the newsstands with this orange-hot cover featuring the lovely ladies of the show. Uzo Aduba, Danielle Brooks, Laverne Cox, Vicky Jeudy, Adrienne C. Moore and Samira Wiley serve up all kinds of chocolate beauty for the July cover, celebrating “sexy at every size.”
The gorgeous girls took time out to talk to the magazine about the task of loving themselves in a world that loves to break women down.
Laverne Cox on how she learns self acceptance:
“This is intense, and it’s hard. What I’ve been doing is looking in the mirror and listing all the things I have an issue with and then saying, ‘This is beautiful.’ I just go down the list and tell myself, ‘You have to accept that this is you today.’ I make time to do this.”
Danielle Brooks on the beauty of diversity:
“Being [my size] in this industry is so rare but regular people look more like me than runway models. To show beauty in a different way really lights me up inside. That’s so cheesy, but it does.”
Uzo Aduba on her signature grin:
“For the majority of my first 18 years, I hated my gap. My mom would tell me that in Nigeria, it’s a sign of beauty. I was like, ‘We’re in Massachusetts.'” She continues, “Today there’s not a selfie or personal photo I take where I’m not smiling wide. It sometimes feels as if I’m making up for lost smiles.”
The July 2015 issue of Essence will be on newsstands soon. In the meantime, start your OITNB marathon now, as the third season is set to be released on Netflix June 12

Jussie Smollet, 32, on getting Lee Daniels attention after hearing about the show: “I jumped on Instagram and direct-messaged Lee and said, ‘Sir, I know you get this all the time, but I’m a singer, actor, dancer, songwriter and musician. I am Jamal Lyon in more ways than one.'”
Bryshere “Yazz” Gray, 21, on youth mentoring and talking to his young fans: “I would hear things like, ‘My dad was never in my life…’ and my response was, ‘My dad was never in my life…Don’t feel like you don’t matter.'”
Trai Byers, 33, has a two-fold reason for working out: “I work out for two reasons: one, because I’m an actor and two, because I’m somebody’s [future] husband. I want to be prepared for the woman God has for me.” Swoon!
